Entomology art class week four. Today we used microscopes to draw close up of the beetles. Click on the thumbnail to see the full image.

It's a rose chafer beetle. We also had a talk about science, art and observation by scientist Dr. Adrian Rundle. I think this has been my favorite class so far. The next one will be in two weeks, and we'll be using the microscopes again.

Thanks! It was loads of fun. Next week we use a stronger magnification.

It didn't need the hyphen. I orginally had it as "Rose-Chafer."

I never saw that. It was already "beetle" when I first read it.

Whoa! They're fuzzy little things.

Looking through the scope like that would have given me a headache after a bit. D: But being able to draw detail at THAT level with THAT kind of reference would be so awesome.

Yeah the hairs aren't really noticable without the scope. Under the scope you can see lots of little pits on their wing cases with hairs growing out of them.

The funniest thing was that 90% of us were wearing glasses and we had to keep taking them off to look down the scope. It was a big problem for the first half hour until we found a way to compensate for it (we looked down one lens instead of two and took the rubber bits around the eyepiece off).
